Scope & Content Launch of the Cumberland, the first Ferris ship launched from the Cumberland Shipbuilding hull yard located between Cushing's Point and Spring Point. The Cumberland was launched on June 29, 1918. It was a 3,500-ton capacity, steam-powered, wooden freighter. Cumberland Shipbuilding was a World War I shipyard that was laid out in 1917. There were four shipways; keels for four ships were laid in January 1918 and all four ships were launched that year.
