Title |
Disastrous conflagration in Portland - Galt's and Atlantic wharves destroyed - three steamers burned in the harbor |
Date |
1873 |
Scope & Content |
1873 - large fire on the Portland waterfront burns ships and freight sheds. The fire started in a pile of wood shavings in the New York freight shed on Galt's wharf and quickly spread to the steamer Dirigo that was discharging alongside, then spread to the freight sheds of the Boston steamers at Atlantic wharf. The Grand Trunk elevator on Galt's wharf burned down. The Dirigo went adrift after the ropes securing her to the wharf burned. The steamer Falmouth was able to get clear and moved to safety down the harbor, as did the steamers Chase and Forest City. The steamer Montreal of the Boston line attempted to do the same, but she came up against the Dirigo and the fire spread further. They anchored the Montreal off of Bug Light and left her to burn. The steamer Charlotta also caught fire and was destroyed. Published in the Daily Kennebec Journal, August 11, 1873. |
