Date |
2023 |
Scope & Content |
Feature story about early grocers and gas stations at Broadway and Evans Street, known now as 1108 Broadway, South Portland, Maine. A Window on the Past history column by Kathryn Onos DiPhilippo, executive director of the South Portland Historical Society. Published in the South Portland Cape Elizabeth Sentry, June 23, 2023. Jesse Dyer, Jr. had the first building constructed on the east corner of Evans Street and Broadway sometime between 1861 and 1865. The building had space for a store on the basement/lower floor and residential space above. Dyer sold the building to Freeman Evans in 1865. Evans ran the store there until he retired around 1885. Other store operators included Knapp, Jenness and Company, William E. Dyer, Frank C. Sawyer, Foster and Latham, and Hicks IGA. Cleon Hicks sold the property to Tremarco Corporation in 1958 (Tremarco later merged into Gulf Oil Corporation) and several gas stations subsequently operated from that corner, including Mulhern and Sampson in 1960, Dean's Gulf in 1961, Ivan's Gulf (Ivan Perkins) in 1961, Richard Feyler's Gulf in 1962-63, Elvin Sawyer's Gulf in 1964, Charles Dyer's Gulf in 1965, Kimball's Gulf in 1966-1976, Mark-Man Gulf, Pleasantdale Gulf, and Ray-Mac Gulf. Dominic Reali purchased the property in 1982 and had the current store built in 1982 as another location of Amato's Italian Sandwich Shop. |
