Scope & Content |
Feature story about Pine Tree Park in South Portland, Maine, where the Boston Red Sox played an exhibition game in 1909. Pine Tree Park was operated on land leased from the Elias Thomas family by the Pine Tree Athletic Association, incorporated in 1904. The Pine Tree A.A. built a baseball diamond with a grandstand, ticket office, and bleachers. When the Pine Tree A.A. was incorporated, its officers were Josiah F. Cobb, president; William P. Carroll, vice president; Fred G. Hamilton, treasurer; Frederick C. "Doctor" Morrill, business manager; and Charles A. Jenney, assistant manager. When the baseball team was first formed, Elmer M. Cobb served as manager, finding players and lining up teams to play; he resigned in July, 1904, and Morrill took over as the team manager for the rest of the season.
