Feature story about Thornton Heights, once known as Skunk Hill in South Portland, Maine. James B. Thornton, Jr. (1794-1873) was the head of the Thornton family that acquired a large amount of land in western South Portland in the mid-1800s. His son, Rev. James B. Thornton, was the pastor of the FIrst Congregational Church in Scarborough from 1851-1855. Another son, Charles C.G. Thornton, served as captain of Company C of the 12th Maine Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.
