Willis F. Strout, short biography taken from the 1896 edition of Leading Citizens of Cumberland County, Maine. Two pages. Willis Strout was the grandson of Daniel Strout, Sr. and son of Daniel Strout, Jr. His uncle was Joshua F. Strout, keeper at Portland Head Light. Daniel Strout, Jr. opened a grocery in Point Village, Cape Elizabeth (now Willard Square, South Portland) in 1858, continuing in business until 1886 when he died. Willis Strout began working in the family store as a clerk when he was 16, and took over the store when his father died, running it until 1889. He later opened a grocery store in Willard Square with Sherman G. Willard in 1893; the business name was Willis F. Strout & Co. He sold his interest to Willard in 1895. |
