A Window on the Past history column by Craig Skelton, guest columnist for the South Portland Historical Society. Published in the South Portland Cape Elizabeth Sentry, January 18, 2008. Notes from Kathy DiPhilippo: 1) The marker was once part of a 6,000 sq.ft. park that was located on the corner of Broadway and Cottage Road. The Admiral Robert E. Peary Park was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1949. The South Portland Public Library had not yet been built. 2) Robert E. Peary also attended the District 3 "Little Red School" on the corner of Highland Avenue (then known as Barren Hill Road) and Evans Street. |
