Nutter, Kimball & Co. ledger recording expenses from 1872-1884. Eben Nutter was a cooper and entrepreneur. He was living in Cape Elizabeth (South Portland) in the 1850s and purchased many tracts of land. Circa 1859, he moved to Cresson, PA, with many family members where they engaged in lumbering and the manufacture of shooks. After the Civil War, Eben and his family returned to Cape Elizabeth. Eben built a large home on (what became known as the) Nutter Road, and his brother Henry built a large home on Evans Street. Eben went into business with George Barstow, operating a cooperage known as Nutter and Barstow. He also went into business with Henry - their business was known as the Nutter Brothers, operating a retail store on Congress Street in Portland. When the Barstows left the Nutter and Barstow partnership, Eben partnered with George L. Kimball and they called their business Nutter, Kimball and Company. |
