The SS Charles Augustus Young launched on December 3, 1943. The Liberty ship was constructed by the New England Shipbuilding Corporation in South Portland, Maine. The vessel was named for a famous astronomer and the inventor of a new form of automatic spectroscope. She was christened by Alexandra Sewall, the daughter of Governor and Mrs. Sumner Sewall.
