1855 - notice is hereby given that a lighthouse has been erected on the outer end of the Portland breakwater. The structure is built of wood, and the plan is octagonal. The center of the height is 23 feet above the breakwater, and 25 feet above ordinary water. The illuminating apparatus is a sixth-order Fresnel lens. The light is fixed - red - and should be visible in ordinary states of the atmosphere, 10.5 statute miles, or 9.5 nautical miles. The color of the lighthouse is white. The light will be lighted for the first time at sunset on August 1, 1855, and will be kept burning every night thereafter from sunset to sunrise. By order of the Lighthouse Board, W.B.
