Title |
Before the Maine Mall: Charlie Dwyer's pig farm |
Date |
2024 |
Scope & Content |
Feature story about Charles F. Dwyer: coach, entrepeneur, pig farmer and recycler. A Window on the Past history column by Kathryn Onos DiPhilippo, executive director of the South Portland Historical Society. Published in the South Portland Cape Elizabeth Sentry, September 6, 2024. Part two of two articles (part one was published on August 30, 2024). During WWII, Charlie Dwyer operated Dwyer Trucking Company, running trucks to the shipyard in South Portland to pick up and dispose of trash. From the late 1940s through the mid-1960s, Dwyer operated a pig farm and recycling facility along the "new" Payne Road (the street was later renamed Maine Mall Road). Dwyer would contract to pick up the trash and garbage from city and town neighborhoods and also picked up garbage from businesses like Jordan's Meats, B.D. Stearns, and H.P. Hood. The trash and garbage was transported to his Payne Road facility. Food waste was fed to the pigs; metal, paper and other recyclable material were separated; and non-recyclable trash was burned. |
