Launch of the Liberty ships SS George Cleeve, SS Jacob H. Gallinger, SS Silvester Gardiner, and SS John A. Poor on Wednesday, June 23, 1943. The ships were constructed by New England Shipbuilding Corporation in South Portland, Maine. The launch of the John A. Poor, 40 days after its keel was laid, set a new record at the shipyard. The Cleeve was named for one of the founders of Portland. It was christened by Cate Thomas, a direct descendant. The Gallinger was christened by the wife of Fred M. Ball who suggested naming the ship Gallinger for the New Hampshire senator. The Gardiner was named for the Rhode Island doctor who introduced the concept of innoculation to the US. It was christened by the wife of Marc Peter, Jr. The Poor was named for a Bangor and Portland lawyer who played a key role in the construction of a Portland-Montreal railroad line. It was christened by Annette Jane Carter. ***The SS John A.
