Scope & Content |
Feature story about Old Sparhawk Mills, 60 Cottage Road, South Portland, Maine. A Window on the Past history column by Kathryn Onos DiPhilippo, executive director of the South Portland Historical Society. Published in the South Portland Cape Elizabeth Sentry, July 29, 2022. Old Sparhawk Mills was incorporated in 1922 by John Cox, Charles Merriam, and Elton Thompson. The company was originally located in Portland. It appears to have been acquired in 1925 by Ernest F. Ginn and Ernest E. Gowell, who moved it to 60 Cottage Road in South Portland, the former site of the Philip Doyen Shipyard. Old Sparhawk Mills operated at Cottage Road from 1925 through 1961 when it moved to Yarmouth. Throughout much of its history, the company was owned and managed by the Gowell family. Ernest Gowell served as treasurer and general manager from 1925 until his death in 1941. His son Ralph then ran the company through 1944, when it appears to have shut down temporarily. In 1947, Ernest's son Earle restarted the company and it remained operating in South Portland through 1961. |
