The schooner George Deering was damaged in a gale off of Cape Hatteras. A huge wave came over the schooner, breaking the main boom with the mainsail furled to it. The captain and three men were washed overboard with it. Captain Willard was able to grab onto the main peak downhaul; he held on and was dragged behind the vessel for about 10 minutes before it finally came about and he was able to climb back on board.
