Feature story about the six-masted schooner Edward J. Lawrence. A Window on the Past history column by Kathryn Onos DiPhilippo, executive director of the South Portland Historical Society. Published in the South Portland Cape Elizabeth Sentry, November 24, 2017. The Edward J. Lawrence was launched on April 2, 1908, from the Percy and Small shipyard in Bath, Maine. She was 320 feet long and 50 feet wide. Her first commander was Captain William R. Kreger. In April 1925, the Lawrence was anchored in Portland Harbor when a lawsuit was filed against her by a tugboat company for non-payment of services. Remaining there idle for the better part of a year, the Edward J. Lawrence was destroyed by fire and sank off Fort Gorges on December 27, 1925. |
