The Bancroft and Martin Rolling Mills Co. building at 7 Main Street, South Portland, Maine. The building was part of the former Portland Rolling Mills. The mill came to employ over 200 workers, mostly Welsh and Irish immigrants. More than 14,000 tons of steel rails were manufactured there annually. Located in the neighborhood of Ligonia, the mill turned entirely to steel fabrication in the 1930s. Published in the Portland Press Herald, January 14, 1993. |
