Feature story about the Lord Brothers and Company processing facility in Ferry Village in South Portland, Maine. Published on the South Portland Historical Society blog on wordpress.com, August 15, 2025. Lord Bros. & Co. was established in 1892 as a partnership of Samuel and Joseph W. Lord, brothers, and Joseph Lord's father-in-law, Clinton R. Jones. They operated from Central Wharf in Portland, importing salt and importing, curing and packing salt water fish, such as cod, haddock, and mackerel. In 1899, Lord Bros. leased the property and buildings in South Portland that had previously been used by the fish dealer Lewis, Chase & Whitten. They processed fish at the South Portland location for nearly a decade. The buildings and wharf were leased to E.W. Brown company for a sardine factory in 1910. Joseph W. Lord lived at 28 Woodbury Street in South Portland. |
