Date |
2025 |
Scope & Content |
Feature story about Pine Tree Park in South Portland, Maine, where the Boston Red Sox played an exhibition game in 1909. Pine Tree Park was operated on land leased from the Elias Thomas family by the Pine Tree Athletic Association, incorporated in 1904. The Pine Tree A.A. built a baseball diamond with a grandstand, ticket office, and bleachers. When the Pine Tree A.A. was incorporated, its officers were Josiah F. Cobb, president; William P. Carroll, vice president; Fred G. Hamilton, treasurer; Frederick C. "Doctor" Morrill, business manager; and Charles A. Jenney, assistant manager. A Window on the Past history column by Kathryn Onos DiPhilippo, executive director of the South Portland Historical Society. Published on the South Portland Historical Society blog on wordpress.com, May 2, 2025. The heyday of Pine Tree Park was from 1904 to about 1910. General manager Morrill was a former teammate of John I. Taylor who owned the Boston Americans (that team changed its name to the Boston Red Sox in 1908). Professional players who played at Pine Tree Park for the South Portlands, later named the Portlands, were John J. O'Brien, Pop Williams, and also Harry Lord, who was an up-and-coming player when he started there in 1904, and who went to play for the Boston Americans in 1907 and was captain of the Boston Red Sox in 1910. Mention of a game between the Portland team and the Bloomer Girls on July 18, 1905, including a depiction of the game in the Portland Evening Express. |
