Fort Preble - Building 24, Hospital, later converted to Barracks - record from the Quartermaster Book. Building 24 was built in 1901 at a cost of $22,112.60. The building was inititally constructed as the fort hospital with a 12-bed capacity. It was built with a stone foundation, brick walls, wood floors and a slate roof. The building designation was changed from Hospital to Barracks in 1933. The Barracks had a capacity for 70 men. This building is now known as Howe Hall on the campus of Southern Maine Community College. |
