Billhead, Steamer Forest City, a receipt for payment of freight and wharfages. Receipt is date stamped October 22, 1862. In 1863, the Forest City was requisitioned and hastily manned with 35 soldiers of the 17th Regiment of the U.S. Infantry from Fort Preble under the command of Capt. Nathaniel Prime. The Forest City was armed with a six-pound field piece and a 12-pound cannon. Along with the Steamer Chesapeake, the Forest City chased down and captured Confederate raiders aboard the Revenue Cutter Caleb Cushing that the raiders had seized the previous evening. |
