Once Upon a Time: At Point Village |
Scope & Content |
The Grand View Hotel: South Portland's largest hotel at 551 Preble Street was once a private home of ten rooms and looked like this in 1888. Built prior to 1870, the main part of the original house now forms part of the hotel, with many of the old features including the small paned windows still remaining. Published in the Portland Press Herald, August 30, 1949. Typical of the homes then in old Point Village, as the Willard section of the Cape shore was known. The house was in the Woodbury family several years and was sold by Charles F. Woodbury in 1898 to George W. Libby who converted it into a summer boarding place. In 1901, Mr. Libby sold the house to Mrs. Bessie W. Hearn who enlarged it, made extensive alterations, built the annex, and gave it the name, Grand View Hotel, with 54 rooms. Mrs. Hearn operated the hotel for 19 years and sold it to Flora Johnson; 25 years later, in 1945, Mr. Herbert P. Cook became owner and proprietor. Mr. Cook, speaking about the original house within the hotel, says "It is as staunch as when it was first built; it shows skilled workmanship." The Grand View is having an excellent season with a peak registration the last week in July of 185, and today Aug. 26, 1949, we have 100 guests. When the original house was a private residence, it catered to a few "summer boarders" from Montreal, and as the Grand View Hotel is still a favorite with our Canadian neighbors. |
