Date |
2025 |
Scope & Content |
Feature story about George C. Mountfort. Mountfort ran a grocery at 72 Ocean Street in South Portland, Maine. The store began as a partnership with his brother Charles F. Mounfort, known as Mountfort Brothers, but Charles left to start his own grocery in Portland and George ran it on his own until his death in 1899. His sons, John and Edward, continued to run the store after his death, under the name Mountfort Bros. again, until it closed in January of 1901. A Window on the Past history column by Kathryn Onos DiPhilippo, executive director of the South Portland Historical Society. Published on the South Portland Historical Society blog on wordpress.com, November 14, 2025. George Mountfort's brother, James Mountfort, was a sea captain. James married Ellen York and he partnered with Ellen's uncle, Captain Jeremiah C. York of Ferry VIllage, in captaining the schooner Sarah and Ellen. York would captain her in the summer and fall, Mountfort in the winter. |
