Launch of the SS Ezra Cornell, the SS Timothy Dwight, and the SS Francis Amasa Walker on March 7, 1943. The Liberty ships were constructed by South Portland Shipbuilding Corporation in South Portland, Maine. The ships were all named for the presidents of colleges - Cornell for the first president and founder of Cornell University; Dwight for the president of Yale University; and Walker for the president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Cornell was christened by Emily Lebengood Cornell, a direct descendant. The Dwight was christened by Helen Ellena Sewall, wife of Maine Governor Sumner Sewall. The Walker was christened by Mrs. Karl T.
