Feature story about Sam and Lillian Silverman. A Window on the Past history column by Kathryn Onos DiPhilippo, executive director of the South Portland Historical Society. Published in the South Portland Cape Elizabeth Sentry, August 5, 2022. Sam Silverman operated Sam's Grill at 435 Commercial Street in Portland, Maine. By 1930, he was operating two businesses on Willard Beach in South Portland: the Willard Beach Bath House and Sam's Lunch. He also operated a small pop corn stand next to the New Willard Inn. By 1936, Sam and his wife and two kids had moved to South Portland where they lived at 22 Willard Street. In May, 1936, Lillian bought the New Willard Inn property at 6 Willard Street; they kept Fred W. Richardson on to manage the inn. During WWII, Lillian operated the inn as a boarding house. In 1940, Sam Silverman began operating a restaurant at 20 E Street in South Portland, known as The Barbecue. In 1944, Sam leased buildings on the corner of Ocean and B Street where he started a used car sales business. |
