The Liberty ship SS Samuel R. Aitken was launched July 18, 1945, at the New England Shipbuilding Corporation shipyard, South Portland, Maine. The ship was of the "Zipper" class design, Z-EC2-S-C5, with a slightly different design to its cargo holds to allow for transport of boxed aircraft. The SS Samuel R. Aitken was named for the former vice president of the Moore-MacCormack Steamship Company. The ship was christened by Aitken's widow, Margaret E. Aitken of New York. Published in the Daily Kennebec Journal, July, 19, 1945. |
