Feature story about George "Bert" Brawn and the Brawn Company. A Window on the Past history column by Kathryn Onos DiPhilippo, executive director of the South Portland Historical Society. Published in the South Portland Cape Elizabeth Sentry, July 8, 2022. Bert Brawn started his first cannery in Lubec in 1881, with the support of a partner, Julius Wolff, and Emilius W. Brown; it was known as Brown and Brawn. Bert Brawn came to South Portland, with his family, around 1910 to operate a new E.W. Brown canning factory here. He was active with E.W. Brown from 1910 until at least 1913, then in 1914, formed a partnership with Frank S. Willard known as the Brawn and Willard Company. That company operated for over a decade, then dissolved in 1925 and the Brawn family established their own company known as the Brawn Company. The Brawn Company was in operation into the early 1950s. |
