History of the Portland Shipbuilding Company. Gives history back to the formation of the Cape Elizabeth Wharf and Marine Railway in 1850. The article states that the original founders of the marine railway in South Portland (then Cape Elizabeth) were as follows: Samuel P. Gerts, Joseph H. Perley, David T. Chase, Elias M. Plimpton, David A. Sawyer, Ethan A. Sawyer, and Charles Collins. The railway was operated by several different companies over its lifetime, including the Portland Merchants Marine Railway (starting in 1883), and the Portland Shipbuilding Company (starting in 1891). Published in the Portland Sunday Telegram, November 16, 1924. |
