Enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve Force on 4 Jun 1917. Called into active duty in the U.S. Navy on 21 May 1918, serving as a quartermaster with the rank of ensign during WWI. After his honorable discharge on 31 Jan 1919, he worked as a mariner in the U.S. Merchant Marine; later becoming a captain in the Merchant Marine. During WWII, he again served, on ships carrying supplies to the troops in Europe and in the Pacific Served as a ship captain in the U.S. Navy during WWII |
