Circa 1850, Andrew Sawyer and his brother Ellis came to Portland to find land on which to start a market garden. That first winter, they stayed in the "Old Tavern" at 83 Mitchell Road in South Portland (then known as Cape Elizabeth). They purchased 9 acres of land on the corner of Mitchell Road and Sawyer Street in 1852 and developed the land into an extensive market garden. Buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, Maine |
