1890-1902, Dewey retired in 1890. Eleazer W. Clark and William W. Merrill were admitted to the partnership under the same name. Merrill left a few years later and, upon Jacob Winslow's death in 1902, the firm continued with Eleazer Clark at the helm 1867-1890, partnered with Henry P. Dewey in the firm J.S. Winslow & Co., which became owner of the largest fleet of sailing vessels on the Atlantic coast. Retired from the sea in 1862, making his office in Portland, established a ship chandlery and began investing in the construction of ships. 1862-1863, in partnership with Charles L.York under the business name of J.S. Winslow & Co. From 1863-1867, still in business but dropped the "& Co." 1859-1860, partner in Winslow, Loring & Warren, ship brokers in Portland, Maine Sea captain in the Atlantic, West Indies, and European trade - commanded the brig Noble, schooner Calista, schooner Bloomer, brig Jere Fowler, bark Maine Law, bark Philena Went to sea when he was 14 years old, became first mate at 19 years, and was master of the brig Noble when he was about 21 years old. |
