Memorial Junior High/Middle School |
Description |
Memorial Junior High was constructed when the city decided to divide South Portland Junior High School into two schools. Groundbreaking on Wescott Road was in 1966 and the school was completed and opened in 1967. The architect was Wilbur R. Ingalls, Jr. The building contains 40 classrooms, laboratories, a cafeteria-auditorium, a gym, large music room, administrative offices, and a separate wing for the superintendent's offices. In 1983, all 9th grade classes were moved to the high school and the two junior high schools became middle schools, teaching grades 6 to 8. In 2021, construction began on a new consolidated middle school, located on the former athletic fields of Memorial Middle School.
