Spring Point Ledge Light |
Description |
The origins of the Spring Point Ledge Light date back to 1891 when seven steamship companies got together and requested that a lighthouse be built on that ledge to prevent further damage to their ships. In 1896, Congress authorized $45,000 for a lighthouse at Spring Point; plans were drawn in March, 1896, by Major W.R. Livermore, Engineer 1st Lighthouse District, for a fifth-order caisson lighthouse with fog signal. The lighthouse was built by Thomas Dwyer in 1896-1897 - and was first lit on May 24, 1897, by the first keeper of that light, William A. Lane. Spring Point is a sparkplug-style lighthouse and was referred to as a "stag light" because the keepers and assistant keepers would normally row out to the light and stay out there, leaving families at home on shore. It wasn't until 1951 that the long 900-foot breakwater was constructed. Head Keepers at Spring Point Ledge Light (*research still in progress): 1897-1901 - William A.
