Summary |
Portland Transcript, May 25, 1861, edition, Vol. XXV, No. 8. Paper contains cover page and pages numbered 58-64. Page 59, Railroad accident - On Saturday evening the train from Boston ran over Mr. Eben Skillings, of Cape Elizabeth, who was asleep on the track, near Cape Elizabeth Depot, cutting one leg so badly that it was amputated just above the ankle. He was doing well on Monday. Page 62, Movements of troops - During the past week we have had troops arriving, troops parading and drilling, troops going into camp, and troops getting ready and eagerly longing to leave camp for the seat of war. The out of town companies attached to the 5th Regiment have come in with full ranks, wtih the exception of the Mechanic Falls Volunteers, who are detained by that persistent ally of the rebels - the measles. All of the companies have voted almost unanimously to serve for three years. The Regiment goes into camp this week at Island Park, Cape Elizabeth [South Portland]. This is a good location and the camp has been very handsomely laid out. It is a new thing in the history of our city to have troops emcamped on both sides of it.
