"Dear Friend Anna": the Civil War letters of a common soldier from Maine. The story of Abial Edwards who served in the volunteer infantry. Edwards enlisted for two years in Company K of the 10th Maine Regiment in September 1861; they mustered into service at Camp McClellan on October 4, 1861. Camp McClellan was one of several names given to the campground at Ligonia, Cape Elizabeth (now South Portland), Maine, before the camp was officially designated as Camp Abraham Lincoln in 1862. After Edwards was discharged from the 10th Maine in 1863, he reenlisted with the 29th Maine Regiment, serving with them through June 1866. |
