Bird Neponset Review |
Summary |
Bird Neponset Review, August 1956 edition, vol. 44, no. 8. Published for the employees of Bird & Son, Inc. and the Berry Asphalt Companies. Photo on the cover shows the sardine carriers Black Diamond and Ernest Lowell, empty at midday and tied up at the Seaboad Packing Co. pier and sardine factory in South Portland, Maine. The boats are diesel propelled, run by a two-man crew, between 65 and 75 feet long, and are equipped with radio-telephone. Article starting on page 2 is titled A Can of Maine Sardines, about the Seaboard Packing Company and its operation in South Portland. Seaboard is a Bird Boy customer; Bird & Son is one of several suppliers of corrugated boxes to the plant. People identified in photos on page 3 include Exilda Nadeau and Leonie Cloutier, two of the over 90 people as sardine packers. Also pictured is the canning plant manager Lawrence "Spider" Mansfield. On page 4 is the machine operator Clifford Taylor, and Jean Quinn and Doris Quinn are shown packing cans in boxes. The article states that the packing season at Seaboard is from April 15 to December 1. Sardines are packed under the Possum, Commander, Neptune, and Sea Lion brands. Article on page 6 is titled Maine Turnpike Gets Berry Coating. A large contract for seal-coating 56 miles of the Maine Turnpike with Berry Rubberized Asphalt resulted from the successful test application in June shown in the pictures. Try out area is near the Saco River bridge. In July work began on seal-coating the four-lane old section between Kittery and Portland. |
