Description |
Administrative building at the Boys' Training Center. The building is more commonly referred to as the Castle. With walls 24 inches thick, the building was completed in 1853 at a cost of $73,000. Built in the shape of a "T", with towers, first used as water towers, erected on all six corners, it is of Elizabethan design and was originally constructed as an all-inclusive unit to accommodate 240 boys in individual cells. First heated by fireplaces and wood stoves, steam was introduced in 1871. Over the years, renovations were made that included the removal of the cells and the construction of open dormitories. With the establishment of the cottage system, the building was completely renovated between 1906 and 1908. |
