Description |
Dow Drug Store, Sawyer Street, South Portland, Maine. Photo taken in May, 1947. When Walter Dow took over Thurrell's Apothecary around 1917, he changed its name to Walter Dow Drugs at first, but it later became known as Dow Drug Store. Dow's was a favorite hangout for Ferry Village residents - in addition to selling prescriptions, it had the much-loved soda fountain where they could mix up a coke for you, or you could get a cup of coffee or an ice cream soda. There were also two phone booths inside and a little post office. Russell Newton would later take over the store, then Paul Kierstead took it over around 1952. The store closed in the mid-1960s. |
