Description |
The Liberty ship SS Augustine Heard, pictured in 1943. The vessel was constructed by the Todd-Bath Iron Shipbuilding Corporation at the East Yard in South Portland, Maine. She was launched on November 26, 1942. Note: At the start of the WWII shipbuilding effort in South Portland, the Todd-Bath shipyard built Ocean ships for Great Britain and the South Portland Shipbuilding yard built Liberty ships. The last Ocean ship was launched in October, 1942, and Liberty ships were then constructed at the Todd-Bath yard. In December, 1942, the two shipyards merged and became South Portland Shipbuilding Corp. |
