Description |
Willard School, at the intersection of Pillsbury, Cottage, and Davis Streets. Cornerstone laid June 13, 1867. F.H. Fassett, architect. John B. Chase, contractor. First enrollment, 236 pupils. The first teachers were David O. Moulton and Miss Margaret Pillsbury. Daniel Strout was the agent for School No. Six. Daniel Strout, Jr. was a member of the Building Committee. Destroyed by fire on January 19, 1904. Miss Pillsbury was still teaching when the school burned. Percy Small found in fire ruins the lead box containing enrollment list, coins, Portland newspaper list of town (Cape Elizabeth) officials. Teachers in 1890s: Miss Margaret Pillsbury, Miss Eliza W. Rand, Miss Mabel Parrott. |
