Description |
Hooked rug, handmade by Pearl E. Cash depicting her father-in-law, George Cash and his original peddler's wagon in the Ligonia area of South Portland (then Cape Elizabeth). 39" x 65". Hand dyed wool using natural dyes from onion skins. Circa 1970s. Pearl Cash was married to George Cash's son, Harold. George Washington Cash was born on March 31, 1841. George started out as a peddler and would later establish the George W. Cash Store around 1870. In the 1873 Portland Directory, the Cash family was shown as very active in the Ligonia village (Cash Corner was considered part of Ligonia at that time). Among those listed in Ligonia: George's uncle Francis was a farmer, his brother Andrew was a peddler, his brother Charles was a farmer, and his brother William was listed as a teamster. Most likely related as well: Daniel Cash, a farmer in Ligonia, as well as James Cash, a superintendent at the Cumberland Bone Factory in Ligonia. |
