Original tin sardine can, unopened but empty, possibly a display/sales item, from the E.W. Brown Co. in Ferry Village, South Portland. Sardine factory was located at 173 Front Street (rear), dirt driveway from Front Street down to the factory on the waterfront. E.W. Brown Co. was started circa 1911 with Natt W. Brown listed as treasurer. The Brawn family moved to South Portland to run this sardine factory, from downeast Maine where they had been running their own sardine factory. They are listed at E.W. Brown Co. through 1914, then they opened the Brawn-Willard Company in Portland (later the Brawn Company), on Deake's Wharf. In E.W. Brown Co.'s later years, it was run by William McDonald. |
