Description |
Ship builder's plaque from the Liberty ship SS Samuel R. Aitken. The 16" x 11.5" rectangular plaque is engraved with the ship details: S.S. Samuel R. Aitken, built for U.S. Maritime Commission, Hull No. 3127, by New England Shipbuilding Corp., South Portland, Maine, July 1945. There is a rivet hole on each corner of the plaque. The SS Samuel R. Aitken was launched from a basin at the East Yard of New England Shipbuilding Corporation, South Portland, Maine, on July 18, 1945. The Aitken was a Liberty ship of the "Zipper" type, Z-EC2-S-C5, with a slightly different design to its cargo holds to allow for transport of boxed aircraft. The SS Samuel R. Aitken was named for the former vice president of the Moore-MacCormack Steamship Company. The ship was christened by Aitken's widow, Margaret E. Aitken of New York. |
