While he was well known as South Portland's city manager, Bernal Allen was also associated with baseball throughout his life. While in the United States Navy, he played on various ships' baseball teams. While working as the city manager of Auburn, he worked with former Bates coach, Ducky Pond, to create the Auburn Athletics Association and the baseball team the Auburn Asas was formed; he managed the Auburn Asas for 10 years. In the 1950s, he was a scout for the Boston Braves. In 1965, while working as South Portland's city manager, he was approached by Bob Philbrick, coach of the South Portland Merchants (in the Portland Twilight League) for assistance; he secured Ametek Inc. as a sponsor for the team. Allen later became the general manager of the team, through 1978. He was inducted in the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979. In 1993, at the age of 90, he was still sponsoring the South Portland team in the Northern New England Semi-Pro League; it was a $5,000 annual sponsorship to help pay for rental of Hadlock Field, baseballs, and umpires. |
