David Boyd first started out in the rigging business as an apprentice to Mr. Wiley. He then went into business for himself. In the early 1860s, he formed a partnership with Gardiner F. Hanson in Portland, Maine, called Boyd & Hanson. He ended that partnership around 1870. He then went into the ship chandlery business with John Yeaton, succeeding the firm of Yeaton & Hale with their new business called Yeaton & Boyd. His partnership with John Yeaton was dissolved in 1878.
