After his father's death, his mother Emma Cobb married Captain Joseph Simonton. Throughout the 1930s, he was known for growing tobacco on his farm. It is also said that Cobb was the first farmer to grow iceberg lettuce east of the Mississippi. In the year of his death, Cobb was 106 years old - the oldest living Mason in the US, the oldest resident of South Portland, and the last living charter member of the Willard Engine and Ladder Company.
