He was a merchant and, about 1719, went to Provincetown, MA, with his brother Jeremiah where they engaged in the fishing and whaling industry, owning many schooners and sloops. He moved to (then) Falmouth, Maine, in 1738, and occupied Cushing's Point in the Purpooduck area of the town. He at one time owned Cushing's Island, ME. He also owned the greater part of Long Island, Maine, which was bequeathed to his children in his will. Gov. Shirley dined at Col. Cushing's home on July 23, 1754. As Commander of the County Regiment, in 1751, Cushing was able to furnish 50 men from his regiment to defend the inhabitants against the Indians, and 100 men to protect the Commissioners while they were arranging the terms of peace. |
