Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church |
Description |
Known originally as the Methodist Episcopal Church in Knightville, this building at 25 Cottage Road was built in 1881 at a cost of $3,000. The building dedication took place on October 6, 1881. Church members raised funds for a renovation of the building in 1894; a few years later, they raised more money and had the building moved back on the lot, put a foundation underneath, and made more renovations. The church started to use the name Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church around the year 1915. The congregation remained active here through at least 1927. The City of South Portland purchased the building in 1931 and converted it into a municipal building, used first by the South Portland Police Department. Jail cells were installed in the basement of the building. The City later converted the building for use as its new City Hall. |
