Description |
The original Willard School was a wood structure, erected in 1867 on the triangular piece of land between Pillsbury and Davis Streets. The cornerstone was laid on June 13, 1867. First enrollment, 236 pupils. David O. Moulton and Miss Margaret Pillsbury, the first teachers. Daniel Strout, agent for School No. Six. Daniel Strout, Jr., a member of Building Committee. F.H. Fassett, architect. John B. Chase, contractor. Teachers in 1890's: Miss Margaret Pillsbury, Miss Eliza W. Rand, Miss Mabel Parrott. That first wooden building was destroyed by fire on January 19, 1904. Miss Pillsbury was still teaching when the school burned. Percy Small found in fire ruins the lead box containing enrollment list, coins, Portland newspaper list of town (Cape Elizabeth) officials. After the fire, the school was replaced by a large brick school building on the same site. Willlard School was discontinued in June 1978 and the building was demolished in August 1978. |
