Description |
The Osewantha Garden Club is a South Portland organization, founded in 1934. In 1937, it became a member of the Garden Club Federation of Maine, which is part of a larger national organization. Osewantha is a Native American word meaning "facing east". The club originally had about 200 members who met in "chapters". The presidents of each chapter would then meet at City Hall. The chapters were spread throughout the city. There is only one chapter that still remains and meets today, the Abenaki chapter. Members of the Abenaki chapter meet on their own, but also attend the general meetings of the Osewantha Garden Club. As of 2015, there are only 33 members of the OGC. |
