Portland Terminal Company |
Description |
The Portland Terminal Company was established in 1912 for the purpose of consolidating the facilities of the Maine Central Railroad and Boston and Maine Railroad in the cities of Portland, South Portland, and Westbrook. Under the charter the Maine Central and Boston and Maine have equal rights as to the use of the Terminal Company's facilities. The Terminal Company affords the chief point of interchange between the two Railroads; this interchange having been greatly improved some six or seven years ago by the construction of the Rigby Yard. In addition, there are certain wharf facilities for the handling of water-bourne traffic. These wharf facilities have now been revised or are in the process of revision so that at Wharf No. 1 there is a large storage warehouse for the handling of import wood pulp and general merchandise; at Wharf No. 2 the coal-discharging facilities have been continued for the present; at Wharf No. 3, when reconstruction is completed, the plan is to handle china clay, lumber, pulpwood, and other commodities; at Wharf No. 4, which is a new wharf located at Turner's Island, new coal-discharging towers have been erected which will give speedy discharge for cargo shipments of coal and sulphur. - from the circa 1930 Tidewater Facilities brochure |
